CHALLENGE
Investigate contact inspection of an airport terminal roof whose geometry makes human access hazardous.
MY CONTRIBUTION
Supported the NYUAD–Abu Dhabi Airports collaboration on drone-based contact inspection of the terminal roof.
OUTCOME
Demonstrated an aerial-manipulation approach to terminal-roof inspection, featured in NYUAD’s public collaboration with Abu Dhabi Airports.
Project overview
An NYUAD collaboration with Abu Dhabi Airports investigating aerial manipulation for terminal-roof inspection. The system uses a drone equipped with robotic arms to make contact with the structure. My involvement supported the collaboration’s application of robotics to inspection in difficult-access infrastructure.

Development & Validation
- Aerial manipulation for infrastructure inspection: the drone's robotic arms take over contact inspection of the roof structure, "minimizing the risks and hazards of using humans in difficult tasks" (Prof. Anthony Tzes, NYUAD).
- Targets the aerodynamic roof design of the airport terminal, whose geometry makes conventional human inspection hazardous.
- Featured by NYU Abu Dhabi as part of its industry collaboration with Abu Dhabi Airports on maintaining safety standards at Abu Dhabi International Airport.
