ISAC Radar Cross-Section Campaign

Challenge, contribution, and outcome
CHALLENGE
Integrated sensing and communication channel models need measured radar cross sections of indoor targets, including robots in motion, rather than simulated values alone.
MY CONTRIBUTION
Co-authored the RF electronics study and supported the 25–28 GHz measurement campaign in Kinesis, including the arena and the robotic targets.
OUTCOME
Published in IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications in 2026, after submission to 3GPP RAN1 as TDOC R1-2502052.
Project overview
A telecommunications and RF electronics study: 25–28 GHz radar cross-section measurements in the Kinesis arena, with NYU WIRELESS and Nokia. The bistatic RF testbed characterized a mid-size UAV, a robotic arm executing motions, and a quadruped moving laterally and longitudinally. Goodness-of-fit tests found lognormal and gamma distributions the best models for these targets. The results were submitted to 3GPP RAN1 as TDOC R1-2502052 for Release 19 ISAC channel modeling and published in IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications.

Development & Validation
- The testbed covers 25–28 GHz in quasi-monostatic and bistatic geometries, with bistatic angles of 20°, 40°, and 60°, inside the Kinesis arena (5 × 15 × 8.5 m).
- Targets include a mid-size UAV, a robotic arm executing motions, and a quadruped performing lateral and longitudinal movements.
- Measured radar cross sections fit lognormal and gamma distributions, the forms used in 3GPP ISAC channel-modeling contributions.
- NYU Abu Dhabi and Nokia submitted the campaign to 3GPP RAN1 as TDOC R1-2502052 for Release 19 ISAC channel modeling.
